Card Carrying No0bs!

Hello my newbie loves! Today is going to be a fast post because I want to make sure you all get the absolute most out of the Valentines Day Shop & Hop which has run it’s course and is closing up shop tomorrow. I know there are sooo many gifts to pick up but one thing you can’t miss out on is the gift cards!  Gift cards are just easy lindens in your pocket and there are 3350L to pick up at this event in Cards.

I’ve rounded up all the shops that are offering gift cards into a list with the direct SLurls. I’ve also added a few pics of the main shops to show off the type of shop they are.

Before we jump in… Thank you guys for all the great feedback. Next weeks post will be a Q & A for some of the things y’all have asked. So if you have a question or a tip or a suggestion please please send me a NC in world or ask in the comments section here.

Now let’s jump in!

Bloom – 300L – Home and Garden store. Very nice builds. -> Bloom Mainstore

LaGyo – 300L – REMOVED!

MakeOver Monday

Hey Guys, it’s time for our MakeOver Monday post… But I think we need a new name. We aren’t really “making over” at this point. Help me out here. This Monday series is going n till I run out of things to talk about for new residents, tips and tricks of the Grid and so forth. Feel free to suggest some names in the comments. Heck, feel free to suggest some series ideas as well. But for now, let’s dive in to a ongoing topic: Inventory Control.

Now this is definitely a “Do as I say not as I do” situation because my inventory is currently a hot mess. But I’m tackling my inventory with the same basic guidelines I’m laying out for our new players.  Plus, it’s easier to maintain control rather than wrench it back from the brink of chaos.

Alistar's INventory

So let’s start with Alistar’s inventory. In just the one month, he has collected more than a few things so it’s time to Folder-ize.  I start out by making a folder for each step of getting dressed. So I start at the very basic things – AOs, Mesh Head, Mesh Bodies, skins, hair and eyes.  If you use the “# sign” will pop things to the top of the list. So I make folders labeled like this ->

#1 – AOs

#2 – Mesh Heads

#3 – Mesh Bodies

#4 – Skins

#5 – Eyes

#6 – Hair

Alternately, you can Lump all of this under one folder called “Avatar Body” or “your avai’s name” or whatever you choose. The point is to make all “body parts” easily accessible in folder according to their types so if you need that one pair of sea green eyes you aren’t digging through tons of items that aren’t even eyes. Then you can move on to Making/listing other folders for clothing, types of outfits, accessories, etc. The main thing is the folder system makes sense to YOU.  So take all of my suggestions with your own brand of salt.

Let’s talk about nesting folders. In my personal Inventory I have a folder called #5 – Accessories. This covers a LOT of ground. Scarves, hats, tiaras, crowns, bracers, halos, the list goes on. SO inside the #5 – Accessories folder are numbered folders for each of those things. Again, this is about finding that one item in the tens or even hundreds of thousands of items in your inventory. You can see here I have “Avatar Body” as the main folder and then nested “Heads” and “Skins” inside it.

Screenshot 2022-01-24 203055

Let’s move on to weeding things out. Even a No0b like Alistar already has picked up a few things I know he won’t be wearing.  For example, the Halloween outfit from R&R Swag. Except… I like the jeans. So I open the main folder for the outfit, highlight all the things I don’t want. And drag them in bulk, to the trashcan.

Screenshot 2022-01-24 202927

This sweep can even include NCs from the shop, Ads and promotions included with the item, etc.  The two things I always make sure I keep are the picture if there is one and the landmark of the shop.  So then I can just “trashcan” the junk and keep the jeans.  Then right click on the folder and “Rename” it.  I like the keep the designer’s name in the rename just to remind me where I got it. So this folder ends up with one pair of jeans and is called “R&R Swag men’s jeans.”

Screenshot 2022-01-24 203018

A couple of things about weeding. Some folks toss out the included sizes of bodies they don’t use or even own.  I do keep them. Simply because II don’t know if I might get ne of those bodies in the future. I used to swear I’d never get a mesh body… and yet, here we are.

Another trick for weeding out is -> Use your search function!  Here is a good list I found on Ryan Schultz’ wonderful blog.

These are a lot of the extra things designers put in boxes to help with return business. And as always… you do you! If you want to keep the entire box… do it. It’s your Inventory.

Here are a few more quick tips that will make searching, weeding and organizing your inventory easier.

  • On the search bar you can find items using multiple words by using the + sign.  Say you want to find your blonde hairbases. Type “Blonde + Hairbase” and you’ll get a list.
  •
  • If you are looking for a particular type of item, for example a dance animation, you can filter your search results to just animations. (or Landmarks or whatever) Look at top of your Inventory menu just beneath the search bar. You’ll see a button labeled “All Types”. This is a drop down menu to filter which type of result you want. So even though you have a pair of shoes called Southern Salsa and a dress called Salsa Red when you search for “salsa” the dance with animation selected on the menu… all you’ll get for results are Animations called salsa.
  • Alistar's INventory (1)
  • To make sorting you inventory easier, have two Inventory windows open at the same time. One can be the completed #named folders and the other is the open window of the items you are sorting. So when you have a item folder with a pair of shoes in it…. you can drag it across the screen to the right folder. This is so much easier than scrolling up and down in just one window.  To open a second window simply look for the little gear at the bottom left of the Inventory window. Open it and choose “New Inventory Window”. It will pop up a second window… or as many as you want to open really…. And there ya go.

Double Inventory

One last thing about Inventory. Never feel bad about keeping something just because you like it. Even if it’s something you know you’ll never use again. I love to collect certain things in SL. Gypsy Vargos and wagons are one of my thangs. And I have a ton of ’em.  But it’s not like I have to pay a storage fee to park them in my yard or something. They are neatly tucked into a folder labeled “Vargos”. And it makes me happy.  Same with all my Teeglepet horses. And hair… good Lord the hair…  So just make sure you can find things in the inventory, work your system and enjoy your time on the Grid. Whether your Inventory is 100K or 1K.

MakeOver Monday

Hey there my darling No0bs and all Fabulous Folks. Class is in session once again and we have a TON of things to cover tonight. So let’s jump on in.

First, I want to answer a question I received because I think it’s something we all struggle with: Makin’ those Lindens. I have been checking out one of the easiest ways and that is the Fish Hunt Game. You catch fish and then pop to the game’s HQ and turn them in. The biggest thing is it takes forever to make any significate money. But it’s all free and if you have the patience for it then as you fish you get better at it and over time you start to catch more fish and less trash. If you use the Fishing Game to make money, let me hear from you!

Much like the Fishing, patience is needed for the next “free” money maker: The Money Chairs. I found this one at the Kingbal store. ( Which also has loads of freebies everywhere.)  You only make 1L at a time and only if your letter or a ? comes up. So…. not fun but still totally free. I couldn’t find a list of such chairs or even the “Money Trees” new residents can harvest for their first 30 days.

I’m going to come out and say… the best way to have L$ is simple to buy it with real currency. The exchange rate is good. One Linden is literally one cent. The minimum purchase order is $2.50 which buys you 600L ( at the current rate) You can set up a payment method as you choose including PayPal. Of course , this is JUST my own personal opinion so take it with a huge grain of salt.

I want to clear something else up in response to a nasty comment/NC I received in world. The Bloggers here on FabFree are NOT paid. We don’t even get “free stuff” from most designers and creators. We set piggybanks up at our HQ because some folks like to help out their favorite bloggers with our expenses or to say a little “thank you”. We aren’t ‘begging on top of getting all that free stuff’. We do this because we love it.

So let’s jump to the next thing from last week: Housing.  Now Ms Aline had a post a few weeks ago about a community that was offering free housing in exchange for resident who would be VERY active in the community.   I don’t know if that’s still available but it could be a place to start.

What I can recommend for all us penny-pinchers is a SandBox. These are places you are allowed to rezz objects and build free of charge. There are “premium Sandboxes” out there that are pay or only for folks who have a premium account. But many are simply free open places.  You can find empty ones by typing in “Sandbox” to your search.

Pick one, I picked this one at random. Please respect the rules of each sandbox, there will usually be a sign or an automatic NC delivery with rules.

Then, open your World Map. (ctrl + M). In the left lower side you’ll see your “Location”  Use the arrow or manually enter a height. I picked 1500- ish and that seems to be high enough. Get your avatar in ‘fly’ then teleport up.  Take a look around if the sky is empty as far as you can see, you’re in the right place.

Now, if you’re using FireStorm Viewer simply type ” REZPLAT ” and get a platform. Now you can land and rezz boxes or whatever you need.

You can even rezz a skybox.  There are a TON of free skyboxes on the MarketPlace for you or go grab this gorgeous “New York Apt Skybox” from AppleFall for free.

The outside of the skybox sitting on the platform I rezzed

The beautiful inside. You’d never know you were hovering in space.

Each Sandbox has a different time of “return” when it automatically returns everything in the sandbox to it’s owners. So do check to see when the next clean takes place before you rezz out. And , just as a curtesy, when you log out take/delete your items. Leaving trash in the sandbox (or anywhere you may be able to rezz that isn’t yours) is just rude.

One thing to remember – You can’t set your “Home” to one of these sandboxes. To get around this, make sure you leave Second Life from your platform each time. Then when you come back to log in, log in to “Last Location” and you will pop in at the sandbox.

Okay, my darlings, that’s it for tonight. I promise next week is “Inventory Control”  It’s a huge subject so I want to spend some time on it.  Have a great week and I’ll see ya on the blog!

One PS….  The Legacy FREE gift Body is still available. I picked up both Alistar and Kery a copy and I love it. It’s BOM ready and has a ton of bells and whistles. I highly recommend it.

Cheers FabFree!

MakeOver Monday part 4

Hello hello, Fab Free! It’s that time again… MakeOver Monday! And we’ve come so far! Two full avatars for exactly ZERO lindens. And I really had to grit my teeth a few times. I’m so weak when it comes to having that “perfect’ (To me anyway) look. I really fret over poor Alistar’s hair. And I’m still looking for something better for him. I swear, if I ever become a designer or builder… I will have good free stuff for the guys. But anyway…

Let’s jump in here. SO, we have bento bodies, Mesh heads, Animation Overrides, and hair. All we need now is clothes. I don’t want to dwell on the clothing part since that’s basically what we do here at the Blog everyday. But I do want to mention a few places, I’ve found very helpful.

First is R&R Swag and their “Rookie Alley” . This is a very nice selection of things for both male and female avatars under 30 days. This outfit is a bit of a mix and match from the Rookie Alley and the past group gifts.

Alistar’s second outfit is a second set of jeans from R&R Swag’s Rookie Alley and a group gift from Asteroidbox for the L’Homme group.  L’Homme is one of the hands down best groups to join if you are looking for male clothes and accessories. The group is free to join, the designers are top notch and you have three -ish months to pick the gifts up. I highly recommend it.

Last is a current gift for one of our own FabFree Group designers – MaxMagic. They are offering this great Trekkie hoodie for both men and women. I do love geeky stuff!

Kerydwyn’s clothes are much easier to find, go figure. But I still want to show a few choices for our newbs. The first is from BoHo Soul one of our FabFree Group designers. This is the “Impish” outfit which comes with top, pants and shoes. Which is awesome because free good shoes are hard to find.

The second outfit is from the Cozy Fest event. This event is a bonanza for free gifts from real quality designers. Plus, for new folks… it’s just about everything you can ask for. The group is free to join and each booth has a free gift! Kerydwyn is showing the ‘Maggs’ top from Apple Blossom and the ‘Natasha’ leggings from 1313 Mockingbird lane. These events are great places to “shop” for designers landmarks as well. If you like the gift or what you see in the booth… check out their main store. They may have a free group or other gifts there. Also,

The boots in the second picture are another totally free gift from Body Cult the Marketplace. Digging through the MP can be frustrating… but worth it.

Okay that’s it for today cause it’s late and I’m tired and cranky today. ;P  But I think we have covered some ground. Our new kids are looking like real stars on the Grid now.  Take a look at a side by side!

Wow! And remember we spent exactly… ZERO monies!

SO… next week I will talk about housing and inventory. Or “Now I got clothes… where do I unpack ’em without putting on a free show?”

MakeOver Monday part 3

Hey Guys and Gals, it’s Monday so that means our next installment of “MakeOver Monday” is on the air. Or on the web… or whatever.  First I want to say a big THANKS to Karl Jacob who gave me the tip that Altamura had a new free avatar gift at the  eBento Event! I popped over and grabbed the male gift “TakeMYWay”. And I may have done a little happy dance when I saw it was BoM ready! Then I got it set up and I was SO much happier with this avatar. Right out of the box he is miles ahead of poor “Robert”. The shape is nicer and the face is so much less “I’m gonna cut you” angry. He also comes with his own skin and since he’s BoM ready I won’t have any trouble finding more skins and tattoos, etc. for him.

But for every step forward…  Unfortunately, “TakeMYWay” does not come with a body HUD of any sort. So we are stuck using alpha layers for clothes. Which (in my opinion) is extremely inconvenient. So many mesh clothes don’t even come with alpha layers anymore. So there is that. It’s almost a deal breaker for me. Your mileage may vary.

So, moving on. As you recall we were going to talk about hair today. Again, this was soooo much easier for Kerydwyn. But I found three styles for each of them but there are more out there.  Let’s look at the Ladies first. I also changed, Kerydwyn’s skin to show some of the basic BoM skins you already have in your inventory. Just look under the ‘Clothing’ folder. You’ll also find some hair there too. Some of it, is rather nice, especially the newer mesh avatar’s hair.

Fist is Firelight. The group is free to join and they offer many gifts and several lucky chairs. The best thing is they offer a gift card for 250L to new avatars ( 30 days old or less ) and unlike some gift cards this one is enough to buy a regular hair completely. This is the “Monica” one of the past group gifts available. I’m showing the “Anna” skin from the Inventory too.

Next is “Leela” Hair from Analog Dog. When you hit the landing point, just walk to your left all the way to the ‘coast’ where you’ll see a big glowing ball. Click it and get a selection of free hair. I’m showing the “Kimberly” skin here once again, in your inventory.

Last we have “Tsarina” from A&A. This is the free group gift for the Fabulously Free Group. Of course, FabFree is free to join.

For Alistar, the selection was a bit more challenging. Free hair for the guys is few and far between but it is out there. Having said this, I think this is where I would get off the free ride and lay out some Lindens. The group for N0_Match is 50L and with that you get monthly gifts for BOTH men and women ( Usually a Unisex style) and you get access to literally dozens of past gifts with many many male styles. 50L is literally 0.21 cents USD… I can find that in the couch cushions… ( A note here… yes, it’s 21cents but the minimum amount you can buy is $2.50… so I’d have to check under my car seats too.)   If you’re set on free, do check out the mesh hair in your inventory. The ‘Brandon’, ‘Johnny’ and ‘Wyatt’ hairs aren’t bad.

So first here is “Mike” from Sintiklia. The Group is free to join and there are loads of Group Gifts to pick up. And don’t forget to check the ladies hair as well. Lots of styles are aimed at women but are more unisex.

Modulus’s “Cole”. You can get it on the MarketPlace or in-store and you get the entire Fatpack of colors. This is an extremely well made hair. And the fact that’s free is just icing on the cake.

Lastly is one of those hairs sold as a ladies style but I think it works as unisex. I found “yume” from ASO on the MarketPlace and there doesn’t appear to be an in-world store.  Again, this was the result of a “Free Hair” search on the MarketPlace.

Okay, that’s going to do it for today. I thought I’d get to Inventory control today but I’m thinking that actually needs it’s own post. SO until next week, my dears!

And remember, comments, ideas, opinions etc. are ALWAYS welcome! So let me know what you’re thinking!

MakeOver Monday part 2

HeyHey Fab Free! It’s Monday so that means it’s more of “The Big Make Over”. Today I’m focusing on Alistar and our Fabulous Guys. I do want to note that all of these pictures are totally untouched and unedited.  This is goning to be a looong post so let’s not dither about and jump right in.

So, I I first said I was going to do a male make over avatar I had NO idea how much different it would be from doing the female. But dang, it’s so much more difficult and frustrating. With the girls, I had loads of choices of heads and bodies but the guys really don’t have that much in free choices. I almost threw in the towel and said I’d have to do a limited Lindens make over for the guys. And granted…. using Lindens would be much easier. But I wanted to do free.

So, let’s remember where we started. This is the Second Life starter, “Greg” in his birthday suit. Not all together awful but certainly more ‘human-like’ than human. Why the designers for LL didn’t spend more time and care and artistry for the male population is beyond me.

And Greg close up.

I added this next pic because I wanted to show that the Greg skin is not horrible. In fact it’s not bad at all. It’s just the clunky shape that makes it bad.

The first and only free body I could find was the “Robert” body from Altamura located at the London City Freebie Center. The good and frankly, bad thing about Altamura is that the head comes attached to the body. While this means you don’t have to track down a mesh head. It also means you can’t use a different head if you already have one or find one you like better. Altamura does offer headless bodies and bodiless heads but only as paid items. The other quirk for the free Altamura bodies is they are not Omega or BoM friendly. With the return of BoM I find this rather frustrating. I can only assume that this is because these are all older versions.

This is the Robert right out of the box. Not my favorite look. He looks angry… like axe murderer angry.

“But me back in the box”

So knowing I couldn’t change the head I focused on the shape. A note here, I did change the shape of the body and head using the System sliders to suit my own taste, your mileage may vary.  However, I couldn’t get it just right. So I took to the MarketPlace for shapes. Where I found Sweet’s.  Several free shapes for Robert and others. Loads of 1Ls skins, some free hair, and even their own Bento Bom mesh body for just one Linden. I would have likely picked this based on the quality of their other products but I was set on absolutely free. There are several other Mesh Bento and BoM ready bodies on the Marketplace and the Grid that are under 10L each. And the minimum amount of Lindens you can buy is 2.50$ USD which will net you about 600L. So it’s not like you’d break the bank.

At any rate, I picked “Sweet’s Free! Shape for ROBERT by Altamura” and ran with it. I was able to adjust with the System sliders and got it pretty close to exactly what I wanted. The Sweet’s shape even came with mesh eyes. Alistar is getting closer!

Look’it them cheek bones!

One note, none of the free or 1L male bodies I found came with genitalia. Another drawback for the guys. You can find free male genitals on the Marketplace. However I can’t review them here as we are ‘family friendly’.

So, let’s talk briefly about AOs (Animation Overrides) for both the new kids. There are some basic AOs on the Marketplace for free and one, Bright’s Spunky Girl was the one I used for Julianna for a loong time. It’s basic but really all you need starting out. The female walk cycle is a bit exaggerated in the hip sway but not horrible. And at least the idle poses aren’t like a cat in heat.  It’s not on their MarketPlace, you can only grab it in world -> Here.

There are also two basic AOs (Among others) at Free Dove Listed as “AX oo2 Basically a Boy and Basically a Girl” that I tried. I found them… ok. I liked a lot of the stand animations and they worked well. I found the idles to be too restless and hyper. In fact, that was my issue with a ton of AOs free and paid. You can find all types for free and just need to try them to find one you like. Just pay attention… lots of free AOs are NOT bento rigged. Which means they work… but your hands are going to stick out stiffly and not move well.

Ultimately, I chose the AOs “Daily sLife Free Male Bento” and “Lucky Girl” from Tuty’s for both of our new kids. It’s got Bento right there in the name, the hands move well, the walks are not overly ‘cartoony’ and best the idles are smoothly animated and move from one stand to the next very realistically. This choice didn’t surprise me as I use Tuty AOs for both Juli and Gabe.

SO there we have it for the new kids. We have Mesh Bento rigged bodies and Mesh heads, good skins and they walk less like ducks and more like Egyptians.  (2 internet point for you if you get the reference )

Next week… HAIR! Maybe some clothes and we’ll talk about how to set up your Inventory so it doesn’t catch fire.

Also… if you have questions or comments, please let me hear ’em! There was a great question last week about making Lindens in world and I am still checking out my research on that and hope to have something to say about it next week.

New Year a New You or It’s MakeOver Monday!

Hey there Fab Free. Did y’all know that back in November of last year 55,000 people were actively playing Second Life at one time? 55,000! Each time I log on, I see anywhere from 40 to 50,000 people on the Grid. That’s a LOT of people. I couldn’t find any hard numbers as to how many of that might be new accounts but at least some are to be certain. And I wondered… how hard is it to get started now days. Back in 2009 it wasn’t really hard to get started but it wasn’t terribly intuitive either. Happily, I had a couple of good friends who also played and they helped me out tremendously. In fact, they brought me to “this great place with a ton of freebies called FabFree”!

Then right on the heels of all this musing of time past, another dear friend started modifying a new Alt avatar for himself and asked for a bit of input since he was designing a female avatar. Plus he, hadn’t really ever gotten into the mesh bodies or head before. As we worked he suggested a cool idea: what if Fab Free had a couple of posts about starting totally new in Second Life from the ground up. Sort of a No0b to Knock out in a few easy steps and for FREE.

So where are you going with all this, Juli? You may ask yourself. I’m glad you asked! I will be writing a series of posts taking us right from the beginning of starting an avatar and how you can start to fill your inventory and take the avatar from free beginning Linden Labs starter kit to a personalized maxed out Second Life Star.

So hang on… here we go!

FabFree meet Kerydwyn. I went ahead and started with a female avatar first simply because I am so much more familiar with female goods on the Grid. But I am also going to gender bend a bit here. So also meet Alistar.  Just… wow. Second Life… why do you hurt me when I love you so much?

You can see there is a huge difference between the starter male and female. At least the female avi isn’t… embarrassing.  It’s clear that way more effort has been put into the female side of things. Even the AO included with the starter girl was better. And yes, I hear you guys out there saying, “As usual.” Frustratingly, that trend has played out the entire time I was running around trying to find freebie starter items for poor Alistar.

So lets start with Kerydwyn. And bodies first. I knew I wanted a mesh body because of the bento rigging. Bento rigging basically adds more joints to the basic skeleton of the avatar so it can move more realistically. If you want to go dancing in SL… you want a bento rig. Some bodies are older and don’t have it so be careful to read the description of what you’re getting and try a demo if possible. But at 0L you can collect a bunch, try them out and pick your favorite.

I went with the Ruth body. It’s extremely basic in as far as mesh bodies go. The feet aren’t changeable so the body comes with three styles of detachable feet. But it’s a good starter mesh body. I also picked up the eBody curvy completely free on the Marketplace. It’s not Omega ready and it doesn’t have Bento rigged hands. But again, for free it’s not bad at all. The eBody full version is Omega ready and has all the bells and whistles… like finger nails… Since the body is not Omega ready, I couldn’t wear my skins that came with the starter avatar. But I found a skin color included that sorta matches. And though I searched… I couldn’t find an Omega System kit for the eBody. Even though it’s listed on the Omega website.

On a personal note, I found the eBody Curvy to still be too bubble butt for my taste. Even though I used the slider controls to make it as small as possible. I also didn’t like the way the vaginal area was sculpted. But that would change with the skin worn or other appliers added. So you’re mileage may vary.

Ruth Body on the left – eBody on the right – both with the “Leah” head from Kalhene.

I had already picked up the free Lelutka heads before Christmas, but I thought that might be kind of cheating. So I grabbed the lovely free head from Kalhene – “Leah”. I was also able to pick up a few free group[p gifts for later. And I will point you over to the list of Mesh bodies and heads right here on FabFree.

I really like this head even though it’s rather basic. It does come with a small HUD for eyelash length, 24 colors for the lips, a glossiness meter, a blink switch and a switch to hide the eyelashes. It also has a switch to “hide” the lips but all it did was take off any color I had put on.

The other “bad” thing… I couldn’t just use the Leah shape for the head. It’s a full body shape. And no amount of sliders could make that booty look smaller. So I ended up wearing the full body shape that came with the eBody. But the original face shape that comes with Leah is so much prettier.  I may mess around with it more and see if I can slider it back.

Okay… so that’s it for today.  Next Monday we’ll take a look at this same process for poor suffering Alistar. And we’ll talk about AOs plus hair!

I hope someone out there reads this and says “Just what I needed!” If you have any questions, comments, corrections or raspberries, feel free to holler at me here on the blog!
