I no longer make New Year’s resolutions. At the ripe old age that I am in RL, I’ve learned – usually the hard way – that just because the calendar ticks over to January 1st, that does not mean I’m ready to make any major life changes. If it did, my house would be clean and perfectly organized, I’d have the business credential I vowed to pursue, my book would be written, and I’d be about 15 lbs thinner. Instead, I get a few weeks of success, followed by months and months (sometimes years) of guilt.
That being said, I still take time at the beginning of every year to think long and hard about life. And when I come up with something that needs fixing – which I usually do – I make a promise to myself (yes, I know that sounds a lot like a resolution, but trust me, it comes with a lot less pressure). This year, my RL promise to myself is to “be in the present.” Simplistic? Yes. But simple? Not so much. To a gal with a full plate, including a business, a family, volunteer work, and SL, among other things, it is very difficult for me to just… be. To stop and smell the roses, so to speak. I’m always thinking about what I have to do next instead of what I’m doing, and I feel like life is moving so quickly that if I close my eyes for 2 seconds, I will have missed something important. I don’t want to wake up one day and find my daughter packing up her car for college, leaving me full of regret for having missed spending as much time with her as I wanted when she was young.
To quote Ferris Bueller, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
Along those lines, the first major change I made in SL for 2014 was to get a new house and move into the sky. While I truly love the sim where I live, I’d really grown tired of strangers walking into my house – and staying – uninvited. So instead of moving away, I moved up. And while I’m waiting for the movers to bring my furniture, I’ve decided to sit and enjoy the quiet with my furry housemates.
Several items around me are worth mentioning: the lovely, lighted 2014 is the current group gift from ::Fabuleax::, and the vase of flowers behind it is a gift from JoHaDeZ. The packing box and books, as well as the elegant wine lights, are group gifts from tarte. Both my sandals and the cute tissue box on the book pile are Fifty Linden Friday sales items, which, as of this writing, were still on sale for 50L – probably not for much longer, though! The pretty picture on the mantel, as well as the adorable guinea pig are gacha items from ::Fabuleax::; I got lucky and managed to win 2 rares! The guinea pig comes with a cute holding pose, but he got loose, so I decided to let him play with Fiona. And finally, my house of cards was 5L on the Marketplace.
As for what I’m wearing, you can find it at B!ASTA as their New Year’s Resolution Hunt gift. I’m wearing it in honor of the many years in which I resolved to lose weight and exercise.* 😉
May you all have a wonderful 2014 – don’t forget to enjoy it!

* As a side note, last September 19th I “resolved” once again to lose weight and exercise, and I’ve lost 12 lbs as a result. Which just goes to prove that what matters is your determination, not the date on a calendar. 🙂
