FabFree – Fabulously Free in SL

Simply Fabulous Free and Under L$75 Finds in Second Life – Since 2007

All you need is love

The Summer of Love Fair has started and its aim is to spotlight mental health issues. Nearly 200 designers have come together with specially created items only available at the fair and special free gifts for everyone. The Fair runs until August 8th. There are question marks around the fair that give you information about mental health so people can learn more about the subject and inside the question marks are also gifts.

I am telling you now though, it is a lagfest from hell so you will need to deprim, be patient and wait for things to come into your inventory and NOT multi-click the question marks to cause more lag while it tries to deliver things to you.. and yes I appreciate it is annoying when Miss Huge-gown-bling-queen-prim-hair-arc-killer is standing next to you and doesnt understand that she has to look less than fabu to get the goodies, but try to be polite.

Also please take the time to read the notecards or file them in your inventory to read at a later date. It is important for people to know more about these issues so everyone has a better understanding of mental health not only for themselves but for the people around them.

  1. It helps to temporarily block Miss Huge-gown-bling-queen-prim-hair-arc-killer too. I blocked everybody that had on any prims and was able to walk around and scoop up the goodies.

  2. I’ve been in, and agree on its lagfest credentials. But I don’t want to talk about that, I’m rather more concerned with the ‘mental health issues’.

As an occasional sufferer from depression, I know from experience what an utterly debilitating illness it can be. I’ve had surgery, given birth twice, broken collar bones, and all of the other little painfiul things we suffer in the course of life. But while physically well, I can say NOTHING matches the sheer awfulness of depression, an illness I would not wish on my worst enemy.

The fact that it can rise up and bite you on the bum out of nowhere is scary, and there have been times when I haven’t been able to engage fully, sometimes even partially, in real life, never mind Second Life. It has caused long, long absences from SL because I just couldn’t be bothered. Dress up my avatar? I can barely face dressing myself!

I’ve been exceptionally lucky in the support I’ve received from my husband, my family and my friends. And I’ve also been lucky enough to have an extremely supportive circle of SL friends who have been there for me, and have made outstanding efforts to cheer me up when I’ve popped in while feeling low.

I sincerely hope that everyone takes the time to support The Summer of Love, that their L$ help raise awareness in SL, and I echo Whisper’s thoughts on it. READ THE NOTECARDS!

We all need to be more aware of illness that affects (as far as I recall) 1 in 3 of us at some stage of our lives. If not you, almost certainly a close friend or family member. MAKE YOURSELVES AWARE!

Sometimes SL isn’t just a game, or an exercise in assembling the largest virtual Barbie Doll wardrobe ever seen. Sometimes, there are genuine people out there who will be there for you, inworld, whenever you’re feeling blue.

Please support the Fair whatever way you can. I know I shall be doing just that.

  3. *giggles* that works too D :p

  4. Whenever I’m in a laggy zone (FLF et al), waiting for an item to rez while Madame Bling/AO/Hair/Shoes competes for rezzing, I reach for my trusty Derender Ray Gun and *ZAP* she’s gone and the item rezzes at last :p

  5. Great post, Ella! It really does help to know one is not alone in dealing with the impact of mental health conditions on your life and the lives of loved ones.

Although it’s bothersome, lag just due to high prim numbers at these sort of events doesn’t make me nearly as frustrated as when the prim-overload avatar in question is also wearing stuff that juts out all over the place – wings, full long skirts, floating trains on the skirts, scarves, long, long hair, massive hats or headpieces. And why is it that those people always seem to need to make their avatars dance around all over the place as well? Bonus points (NOT) if they are also clogging up local chat with stupid and/or crude nonsense.

Those of you who are thinking of visiting The Summer of Love Fair, try and get in. It’s got a pretty awesome assortment of items, and a number of the hunt and other freebies are very nice. Try going in at a time when the volume of people attempting to access may be lower. Maybe early morning in the US?
